Thorough Editing and General Proofreading of manuscripts of up to 100,000 words may be commissioned on our Order page, where the fee is shown and the contract prepared as the details are entered. Payment is made by card through Stripe or, in eleven currencies, by transfer, and the manuscript may be sent to us as soon as the contract is signed. The fee includes as many rounds of revisions as necessary to take the work to its final and polished form.
For translation, for manuscripts of more than 100,000 words and for our other services, we would be glad to receive an email at manuscripts@editing.press with a brief description of the work, its length and the time available, together with a one-page sample if possible. We usually reply within the hour, and we will say at once if we cannot take the work on.
The form of the editing depends on the project. Academic work commissioned for Thorough Editing is usually read by two editors, so that the author receives a rounded view of the manuscript, free of the idiosyncrasies of a single reader. The same arrangement is available for fiction, and authors who would prefer a single editor need only say so.
In General Proofreading, one editor reads the whole text at least twice. Translation is a closer collaboration and usually involves a few conversations between the translator and the author, so that every part of the work remains true to the original.
Many authors return their essay, dissertation or work of fiction to us for a second, and sometimes a third, round of proofreading or editing. We are happy to provide subsequent rounds of revision at no extra cost. Revisions cover the author’s tracked changes up to a total of 10 per cent of the contracted word count, and additional material is charged at the contracted per-word rate.
We are always glad to work again with authors who have entrusted us with earlier manuscripts, and the editing improves as an editor comes to know an author’s work.
As our contract provides, an author who returns with a later manuscript of equal or shorter length receives a discount of 10 per cent, or 15 per cent after referring a colleague who has since commissioned us. Returning authors are welcome to write to us at manuscripts@editing.press, and the Editorial Office will arrange the discount.
The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 to provide editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. Scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded three times per year, with no institutional, departmental, or national restrictions.
